Applications for the 2019 Michael Fridjhon Wine Judging Academy now open

The Michael Fridjhon Wine Judging Academy – in association with the University of Cape Town graduate School of Business, begun in 2007. Michael is SA’s leading wine critic and his three-day course exposes candidates to a range of top local and international wines and intends to refine ideas about wine quality – it seeks to ensure that a steady stream of competent wine judges enter the industry.

The academy will once again take place at the Cullinan Hotel in Cape Town, from 2-4 April 2019.

The cost for the course is R 9 495.00 per person and includes accommodation, meals and course materials. Applications close on 14 December 2018.

Champagne Louis Roederer dominates at the CSWWC

25th October, London – Last night Tom Stevenson and Essi Avellan MW hosted the 2018 Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships recognising excellence across the world of sparkling wine.

The room was filled with the most prestigious names in sparkling wine as they gathered to pay tribute to the talent and excellence that is recognised with these awards.

Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon, Chef de Cave of Champagne Louis Roederer was there to accept an incredible 9 trophies including Sparkling Wine Producer of the Year and Supreme World Champion for the Louis Roederer Brut Premier NV in magnum and a trophy for Roederer Estate in the US. With his signature humility he accepted the awards on behalf of Champagne Louis Roederer saying “it is a recognition of our unique terroirs and the terrific craftsmanship of all our vignerons and cavistes! As Chef de Caves I take it as a standing ovation to my Team Roederer”.

Richard Billett, Managing Director of Maison Marques and Domaines, the UK agent for Champagne Louis Roederer commented: “We are absolutely delighted that the passion, dedication, talent and hard work of the team at Champagne Louis Roederer has been recognised with the range and number of awards received. Tio Pepe top trending sherry brand in the world

Tío Pepe has been named the Top Trending and Best Selling Brand of 2018 according to Drinks International’s Annual Brands Report. 39% of the world’s best bartenders voted Tío Pepe as their number one Sherry brand and 65% put it in their top three.

Jerez de la Frontera, January 16, 2018 – Tío Pepe is the very best Sherry according to the world’s top barmen. 106 bartenders from around the world were surveyed by Drinks International to discover the top drinks brands, offering in the editor’s words, “Tío Pepe offers a snapshot of the buying trends at the elite end of the drinks business”.

Tío Pepe was described by the judges as, “the iconic fino brand is no-brainer for bartenders looking for a drier style.” The leading Sherry brand used by mixologists globally is Tío Pepe, as reported by Drinks International, stands alongside the broader range of González Byass sherries which also has also scored high with the world’s best bar tenders for their full portfolio of premium sherries being voted the Best Selling Sherry Brand.

Viña AB Amontillado, Alfonso Oloroso and Nectar Pedro Ximenez were also ranked in the top 3 Sherry brands used by mixologists around the world.

Hamish Smith, the Drinks International Brans Report editor, said, “In the Top Trending list, Tío Pepe dominates, which shows that, in the midst of [Sherry] renaissance, the big brands still carry an air of novelty.”
